The five behaviours behind your reputation

Your reputation is not one thing. It is five behaviours working together. Reach, recall, resonance, reliability and regard. Each one shapes a different part of how people experience you at work. Open a tab to explore each R, then read the full page for the detail.

What decides reach

What professional Reach is, and why people think of you first

Professional Reach is whether your name comes up early and widely when a need arises. It is whether you are in the conversation before decisions get made, across teams and not only your own. Strong work nobody knows about earns nothing.

Network
Network. How widely and well you are connected across teams, functions and levels.
Message Travel
Message Travel. Whether what you are known for spreads beyond the people you deal with directly.
Salience
Salience. Whether your name surfaces at the moment a relevant need arises, not just in general.
Reach is not networking

If people do not think of you, nothing else matters.

A full contact list means nothing if your name does not surface at the moment a need arises.
Networking and collecting contacts is not Reach.
Reach is being thought of when it counts.
Reach is the prerequisite. The other four R's only matter once people think of you at all.
The reach gap

Where Reach shows up

Plenty of capable people stay invisible outside their own team. They assume the work will travel on its own. It does not. When a client need or a new project lands, the people deciding run through the names they already know. If you are not one of them, you never get considered.

The new need. A problem appears and people list who to involve. You are on the list, or you are not.
The introduction. Someone describes you to a person who has never met you. They have something to say, or they draw a blank.
The cross-team project. Work spans functions and someone picks the people. You are visible beyond your own patch, or invisible outside it.
The shortlist. A role or opportunity opens and names get gathered. Yours is gathered, or it is not.

Common questions about Reach

Is reach the same as networking?
No. Networking is collecting contacts. Reach is being the name which comes up when a need arises, whether or not you have met the person who needs you.
Do you need to be loud to have reach?
No. Reach comes from being known for something useful by the right people, not from volume. Quiet people with a clear specialism often out-reach louder generalists.
Why do capable people get overlooked?
Because their visibility stops at their own team. The work never travels, so when opportunities land elsewhere, their name is not in the room.
How do you measure reach?
Through the Known By Name Index, a 360 assessment which scores you on Network and Message Travel.
